I began painting with oils at the age of 16. After graduating from the University of Colorado with a B.A., I moved to Alaska and began focusing on watercolor painting. Photography had always been a passion, but access to a digital dark room made experimentation less onerous. It gave me the ability to achieve results more akin to my artistic vision that painting afforded.

Many of my photographs are interpretations of that vision achieved through numerous digital techniques. I have tried to make my photographs more painterly in nature and have chosen to print them on a medium softer and more akin to the watercolors that I have produced. I am fascinated with color and, as can be seen, use vibrant variations not necessarily seen in nature. At the same time, when interpreting powwow dancers, I sometimes use the same pallet for the figure and background to portray a sense on oneness with the natural world. I see and imagine these dancers in a spiritual world of the heart rather than in a specific time and place.

My abstract paintings originated from working with and viewing my photographs close up. I began seeing mythological scenes in small areas within my photographs. My interpretations of those small snippets of photographs result in a series of paintings representing beings moving around in a mythological past of my creation.
